Too Soft or Too Firm? Here’s how to Find the Perfect Feel. Léa 28 October 2023 16:34 Updated Your Silk & Snow mattress will be unique since we combine quality and sustainability! When it comes to our mattresses, for most customers, it will be a dream come true from the start. Others might find it takes a little longer, especially if your body is accustomed to a different kind of comfort and bedding. We have found that it is not unusual to need a fair bit of time to adjust to a new mattress, especially if you have been spending many years sleeping on your previous mattress. For our S&S & Hybrid mattress, we use a higher quality, high-density memory foam for the top layer, meaning it may take a bit longer for it to break in when compared to other mattress brands. Think of it like leather, when you receive a new leather piece, it may take some time to break- in due to the durable material! Since foam is a more contouring mattress material when compared to traditional mattresses, it may also take some time getting used to the unique feel. For our Organic Mattress, we use a high quality, GOLS certified Dunlop Latex for our top layer, meaning it may take a bit longer for it to break in when compared to other mattress brands and varieties. Since latex is a more responsive mattress material when compared to foam & traditional mattress, it may also take some time getting used to the feel of the latex. Finding it too firm ? If you find that our mattress is a bit on the firmer side, you can significantly affect the feel by adjusting the base on which you are supporting the mattress. One thing we found is the better supported your mattress is, the firmer it will feel. So if you are using metal slats or have been resting the mattress on the floor, you can try putting the mattress on a wooden foundation (i.e. wooden slats) which will make the mattress feel a little softer. For our S&S and Hybrid mattress, another thing to keep in mind is that if you have recently made your room temperature cooler it can also make the foam slightly firmer, however this can easily be reversed by adjusting your thermostat a few degrees warmer as memory-foam reacts to temperature fluctuations. Additionally, we would recommend looking at your fitted sheet or mattress protector to confirm if it has a deep enough pocket. If the fitted sheet or protector is too tight, this can make a mattress feel firmer than it is. Finding it too soft ? If you find that our mattress is a bit on the softer side, we would recommend looking at your base following the same logic. If you are currently placing the mattress on a box spring or foundation with slats that have wide gaps (gaps should be no more than 2” wide and 3” apart), we would suggest adding a layer of plywood or hardboard between the box spring and your new mattress. We recommend that the thickness of the board should be between 1/8" and 1/4". The thicker the board/plywood, the firmer it will make your mattress feel. You can easily find this material from local home hardware stores. Alternatively, we would like to recommend applying a Latex Mattress topper to your mattress, which will add a firmer, bouncier feeling to your mattress.
