Should I Be Concerned About Potential Smells? Léa 28 October 2023 15:38 Updated When it comes to designing and manufacturing our Silk & Snow mattresses, our eco-conscious values and the health of our customers are one of our top priorities. We are happy to report that you should not experience any adverse or long-lasting smells with our mattresses. We can confirm that the foams in the S&S and Hybrid mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they are fabricated without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This means that they are tested by a third party to ensure that they are safe in terms of chemical emissions. Additionally, they are Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). For our Organic mattress, all of the latex we use is GOLS certified, meaning it's been rigorously tested to contain at least 95% natural latex rubber. Additionally, the cotton we use in our Organic Mattress is GOTS certified, meaning it has been tested to be completely organic as well. Lastly, all of the materials used in the Organic Mattress are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning they are completely free of any harmful chemicals. Some of our customers have reported that they are surprised by how little they can smell when they open their mattress. At first, most people detect some sort of mild new mattress smell, which usually dissipates after about 24 hours. For the handful of people who are more sensitive to the smell, it may be apparent for a little while longer. The good news is that the smell will dissipate over time and that the materials used in our mattresses are safe. In the unique situation where you experience any smells, we would like to reassure you that it will not be long-lasting. Something that may help that new mattress smell dissipate would be to consider a mattress pad or a mattress protector/encasement. The use of a protector can help mask any smells and create a barrier between yourself and the mattress. Spraying the mattress with an odor eliminator spray and letting it dry is also another good option. Additionally, we recommend striping the mattress of any bedding, protector, and covering, and let it air out for a few hours. Opening up the windows and door will promote better air flow! Other tips & tricks would be to keep the mattress close to a natural light source, in a well-ventilated room or setting-up a few vinegar bowls around your room and/or under your bed to help remove any smells (our favorite Nanny’s trick!). Another option, should it be readily accessible for yourself, would be to place activated charcoal bags in between your mattress and frame. This helps absorb any smells surrounding the bag and can be reused for up to a couple of years! Our mattress protector has a multi-layer moisture-wicking technology that allows the mattress to breathe and is cool to the touch.
